| Stock Market Update - August 20, 2004 Stocks shrugged off the rising oil price to some extent last week - mainly due to asset allocation programs switching into stocks. Over the intermediate and long run, oil prices above 40 dollars will mean lower stocks prices. Several factors do not bode well for stocks....... | 2
| Economic Updates / Statistics The economy has been holding its pace of decent economic growth in the first half of 2004 despite mixed results from the hob market. Nonetheless, high oil prices, consumer debt and a declining stock market point to a sharp slowdown in economic growth in the quarters ahead. Our economic indicators...... Our sector watch has raised red flags for the financial, technology and cyclical stocks. Technology, despite the sharp decline in the NASDAQ, remain the most overvalued sector in the market. Financial stocks - mortgage/refinance, money -center banks etc. are in for a rude awakening...... Cash levels in mutual funds are relatively high. This provides the safety cushion the market is currently holding up on. There are neither extreme levels of optimism nor pessimism visible in the stock market - but investors beware --- in bear markets....... We have several downgrades for individual stocks for the months of August and no upgrades. Generally risk for stock performance has gone up.....
